Hap, Leonard, Valerie, Steve & Julio (Things I Loved: March 2026)

Hap & Leonard (AMC+)

This was a delight! loved all three seasons of this series so much, I bought (and read!) the first book in the series.

SAG Actor Awards

Excellent host, excellent show, excellent winners (for the most part).

Mimi’s Nook Nigerian Cuisine

Look, I love me some Jollof rice, and this place had Jollof Spaghetti on the menu.

Yes, I ordered it. Yes, it was spectacular.

Yes, I ate the leftovers. No, I didn’t hate them. In fact, I loved them.

Yes, I made stock out of the chicken bones. It made great soup.

Season 4 of ‘F is for Family’ (Netflix)

Bill Burr is doing some real work on the fatherly abuse cycle in this show. The first two eps of this season had me in awe.

Shrinking (Apple TV)

This show makes me laugh and cry in quick succession. It’s so human. If Ted McGinely doesn’t get an Emmy nomination, it will be a huge misstep. He’s doing incredible work here. I mean, they all are.

Making Eggs

I used to be really bad at making eggs. Now, I’m comfortable making them in a variety of ways. I love my gas stove for this. Something about the electric ones didn’t do it for my brain or something. At least one day a week, I’ll make (close to Waffle House) hashbrowns and scrambie eggs, and it’s one of the highlights of our current menu rotation.

Boston Public (DVD)

This show is W I L D. I am midway through season 2, and you wouldn’t believe all the things that have gone down so far.I almost want to rewatch again from the beginning and make a list.

Valerie Cherish

I rewatched both seasons before beginning the third. I’m so glad I did, because Valerie Cherish’s journey is incredible. And refreshing my brain fully on the nuances between Valerie and Jane, and Valerie and Paulie G, and Valerie and Mickey. I love the long passage of time between each season.

I once told my friend Sam that Valerie Cherish was Lisa Kudrow’s best work. She had not seen The Comeback before, and said that she thought Feel Good (Netflix) was her best work. I’m so glad she did, because watching Feel Good introduced me to Mae Martin and one of the most realistic depictions of my brain I’d ever seen.

The Oscar Stage

I loved how analog the stage was. It was clearly tactile items and not just a bunch of screens offering fake depth. The colors were warm, and the lighting was complementary, and Conan was a solid host. I loved a lot about the Oscars this year… but not all the winners.

Steve Buscemi

Mickey and I are working on a new podcast project with our talented friend Christian, who helps me with design projects from time to time. We’ve recorded four episodes so far, and the third one asked the question “Where do I know Steve Buscemi from?” based on the time when I sent Mickey a DM right before Logan, and I started watching Fantasmas, and I wanted to know where Logan might know Steve Buscemi from, in case he didn’t know who he was immediately.

And so, of course, we fell down a Steve Buscemi rabbit hole, and it was fascinating, and we talked for a full two hours about him. We also watched some of this older work, like Film House Fever and Living in Oblivion. He was an immediate star.

Color Theories (again)

The show that I took my second trip to NYC to see is now streaming on HBO Max, and of course, I watched it the first night it was streaming. It was magical, and it was neat to see some subtle changes from the show I saw live (which was the final night of previews).

Living in Detroit

Always. I had a magical day walking around my city after spending the morning at a Detroit Symphony Orchestra Coffee Concert.

Fantasmas (HBO Max)

Watching this show with Logan was as rewarding an experience as I’d hoped it would be. I felt like he understood the magic of Julio immediately, enjoyed the wild and varied characters, and shed some interesting light on things I’d not noticed or considered before. This 30-minute-ish show is only 6 episodes, and I will rewatch it at the drop of a hat if you want someone to watch along with you.

Pretty Lethal (Amazon Prime)

I watched this movie because of Dan Harmon. Well, actually Harmontown. Well, no, actually, Rob Schrab. Wait, actually, because of Channel 101. No, wait, actually, because of Kate Freund. (this is the short version of a very long and complicated story that I should probably write out sometime.

Kate Freund is the screenwriter of Pretty Lethal, formerly known as Ballerina Overdrive. This movie came into my radar via Freund’s husband, Rob Schrab’s, Instagram account, as he loudly cheered her on every step of the development process of this movie. I love to see a man supporting his woman, loudly and unashamedly, and Rob did just that. So, I, along with Rob, followed along in every step of the development process.

It was a FUN, ORIGINAL movie. As someone who danced (as an adult) and raised a daughter in dance, I loved seeing how the dancers were portrayed as strong and quite capable. Because dancers are strong as hell, y’all. The dialogue was fun. It was great to see Kate Freund show up in a small role.

We want more original stories like this, please.

South Park

This show is an absolute wealth of rabbit holes.

Being Back in Ceramics Class

I hadn’t been to ceramics since early December for a couple of reasons, including:

  • surgery (Nadga)
  • burst pipe (at the studio)
  • lots of snow (in the metro detroit area)

But we’re back at it this month, and it feels so good. I finally got to see that stein I’d been working on forever. To quote Marcy Park, “I don’t like to brag, and I won’t cause I don’t have to,” because this thing is a masterpiece.

I also finished a teapot and another lil caroler that didn’t turn out great. Currently working on a very tall (like 2 feet!) stein with a lid.

Dropout

Just dropping in to say that the other day, when I logged in to watch the new episode of Make Some Noise and saw someone who I had shared my account with had already watched it, my heart was filled with ten tons of warmth. This streaming service makes me so happy.

SNL UK

Been an absolute bop so far.

THING I MISS:

Bodega Breakfast Sandwiches from NYC.

I have started to try to perfect these at home. There have been two trials so far. The second one was better, and I think the thing that would put it over the top would be the perfect savory croissant. Do you have one of these? The ones I have right now are too sweet. I don’t want a sweet croissant. I want a salty/savory/texturey croissant.

I hope I don’t have to end up making my own, though. That just seems daunting.
