Meet My Yard: An Update

If you have been a reader this year, you might recall a challenge we, uh, challenged ourselves with.

Back in the beginning of the summer when things started to get hot, we decided that we were gonna see how long we would make it before needing to turn on one of the two window AC units.

Yeah, the Professor Haus does not have central air. It’s just so well designed that it’s easy to get a cross breeze in almost every single room.

So, what do you think… did we do it?

Before you decide, let me tell you some things.

  • This is unrelated to the rest of the post, but Mickey’s coworker makes the best burritos I’ve ever eaten in my life. Every other week, Mickey gives him a toosmall amount of money and Mickey brings me home a toofat burrito. The burritos have the chicken with the best texture I’ve had, muenster cheese, and jalapenos. I am eating one right now and I am so happy.
  • The highest temperature the interior of the house reached was 87 degrees on more than one occasion.
  • Goddamn, this burrito is good.
  • We were without power for at least one afternoon.
  • The highest low temperature at night was in the upper 70s, on more than one occasion.
  • I wish it were burrito day every day.
  • I am 47 years old and going through perimenopause. still.

Okay, so now what do you think? Did we do it?

I’m happy to report that we did.

There were at least two days where I considered it greatly, though.

However, on the days the house got up to 87, it was for less than an hour. I think the hottest the thermostat read at sleepy time was 83 – and that’s downstairs.

Upstairs, I had an elaborately engineers passel of fans moving the air around in the rooms we needed to be the coolest: the bedroom and the Princess TV room, which I guess is more like the gloopyflowermural room now.

We also have thermometers in almost every room (we like information, okay?), so I know that those two rooms rarely got hotter than 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

I got really great at positioning those fans, y’all.

When it got too hot inside, I went outside. More often than not, there was a breeze. If there wasn’t, we have a Craftsman battery-operated fan that gives a solid breeze.

And then on two days, I used bags of ice on the back of my neck.

Yeah, I’m stubborn.

But I’m also proud of myself. And our electric bill was, like $50 less each month, too. So, there’s that.

You might be wondering, Jacki, are y’all gonna try the same thing in the winter?

It was 38 degrees outside when I woke up this morning.

Inside the house, it was 58.

The answer, my friends, is a resounding hell no.

This was after just over an hour of being turned on – I love our radiators so much, y’all.

Oh yeah, the reason this is yard-related is because it’s about the house and the house lives in the yard. Duhdoi.

I can stand cool much more easily than heat! I resist running the heat unless my fingers are numb…
