Meet My Yard: Snow So Far

We’ve been pretty lucky so far at the Professor Haus. This is our third winter here, and the first two were not bad at all. Sure, we had a few days of snow here and there, but it never stuck around for more than a week.

Last year, we had a thaw in early February. In fact, in the little “Professor Haus Almanac” that Mickey and I are keeping, I noted that I had sprouts coming up in my flower beds during the first week of Feb. I don’t think I’ll see that this year.

This winter has been COLD, y’all. Someone on my TikTok predicted this. I posted a video of Margot with her very fluffy tail a couple of months ago, and this commenter said something like, ‘By the looks of Margot’s tail, you’re in for a long, cold winter.’

Except it wasn’t Margot in the video – it was Martha, one of Margo’s sisters, I guess. That is Margot in the photo above, with a very fluffy tail as well.

We had a few days where the lows were below zero. In fact, one week was so cold that Nadga canceled ceramics class. “No one needs to be out in all that.” – Nadga.

For driving purposes, I agree.

I would not want to be out and driving in this weather. The road folks are actually pretty good about getting the roads salted expeditiously, but still, driving is scary (to me) already, and I don’t want to risk slip-sliding around.

But if I had a winter-trained driver and a vehicle to brave any sort of weather, I’d be out there. Mickey pointed out last year that once you hit 20 degrees or below, it kind of feels the same. I agree wholeheartedly.

As long as it’s not windy. When it’s windy, that’s when I peace out and go back inside. I do not like it.

The wind does make it prettier when it snows, though.

One of my favorite snow pastimes is making footprints. Yes, I am neurodivergent, why do you ask?

Sometimes, I make patterns of footprints or full-on shapes. Other times, I’ll vary the pressure to see how deep or shallow I can make the print. Then, even other times, I will just willy-nilly stomp around.

Snow is fun, y’all.

I have a whole system of clothing, too, which is somehow very pleasing to my OCD brain. For my normal around-the-house wear, I’ll have on some sort of thermal pants or leggings and a thermal shirt, and oftentimes also a hoodie or sweater. I will have a single pair of socks and my slippers from the Shoe Guy.

Then, when it’s time to go outside, I’ll add another pair of (quite thick socks), another pair of pants, and then I get to my “downstairs clothes.”

My “downstairs” clothes” are a small pile of outerwear that lives downstairs and is for stoop use only. Depending on the temperature, and wind speed, and direction, I will add a combination of the following:

  • Third Man Records knit cap
  • Neon green/yellow Elmer Fudd hat with fuzzy lining
  • Neck thing (some thick flowery neck gaiter)
  • Fuzzy pullover
  • Green very large, very thick hoodie that I got in Canada that says, “cannabis is safer than your government”
  • Lil Murda Sweater
  • Very large blue jeans that are also used for yard work in the summers
  • Blue, silver, and white Detroit Lions overalls, size 3x, rolled up one billion times
  • Neon green / yellow, army green and pink crocheted shorts that are impossibly warm
  • A quite large leather motorcycle jacket
  • Electronic hand warmers

More often than not, I will go back inside one time to add a layer.

I’m still learning, y’all.

Here’s more snow pics:
