My Year of Binchy – Week 46: this book makes me mad at men

Here is a list on Bookshop.org with all the Maeve Binchy books I’ve read all year.

Tuesday, November 12
  • Book: Quentins
  • Chapters: The beginning – 2
  • Location: Backyard, sunny and in the low 50s.
  • Smoking: This doesn’t feel as important anymore.
What I’m listening to:
Did I cry?

I did not!

Thoughts while reading (could be about the book, could not):

Two things before we get started:

  1. While I was raking some leaves just a few minutes ago, I realized something. Search Party changed my music tastes. The first time I watched this show, it hit me like a ton of bricks. It was original in a way television rarely is. This show is, without a doubt, the best mediation on escalation that I’ve seen, I think. The soundtrack is what I call nighttime music; it feels like it should be played when the lights are dim and whatnot. Listening in the daylight feels odd unless I pair it with the Succession soundtrack, which lightens it up significantly somehow.
  2. NEW BOOK. I think there is an actual movie involved in this book if I remember correctly, so maybe I will stop saying, “THIS BOOK SHOULD BE A MOVIE ALREADY” while I’m reading.

Speaking of… Let’s read.

Welp, I made it a paragraph in and had to stop to type something.

Is anyone happy with their parents? I mean, for me, no, I was not. And before you slide in here and say that D is probably happy with me as a parent, I will slide right back at you and say, no, probably not, because she deserved way more than what I was. She deserved a parent who had time to grow up herself and learn about her brain so that cycles could have been broken infinitely earlier.

Not a fucking kid, which is what I was. I remember when D was 17 and noticing what a kid she still was. And then thinking back to me, who was out there raising a whole ass other person when I was that same age. I didn’t know shit about the world or how a human should be treated.

Then in this book, I’m reminded of the overly doting parents. Kids don’t seem to appreciate them either. Being a parent is a delicate balance and I don’t think it is for everyone. I also think that is okay.

Okay, I feel like I am rambling now, so I will go back to reading.

This books feels a little bit like a Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead version of my last two books, Scarlet Feather & Tara Road. Like, Ella’s been there the whole time and I’m seeing some of those books unfold through her eyes… and then the future, of course.

oooh, this book makes me mad at men.

New birds heard:

Pine Siskin.

Wednesday, November 13
  • Book: Quentins
  • Chapters: 3
  • Location: Front room
  • Smoking: nothing at the moment
What I’m listening to:
Did I cry?

Naw man.

Thoughts while reading (could be about the book, could not):

New playlist alert!

I’ve been bringing a speaker to ceramics class for the last couple of months, and we’ve been listening to a variety of different playlists, mostly from the 50s and 60s. One week, we listened to the American Graffiti soundtrack. The playlist above is what we listened to this morning.

It was a hit.

Oh, also, I am in the front room because it is in the 50s outside. Which isn’t normally a big deal at all, but it has the deadly combo of being cloudy AF, moist outside, and windy in the wrong direction.

So I’m inside! Here is my view:

Now, I am reading.

Ooh, the romantic lead man in this book makes me so angry. He hasn’t even done the thing that makes me angry yet, but I’ve read this book so many times I know what is coming. And Maeve Binchy built this story perfectly, including details that were like lil Keyser Soze clues throughout.

Ugh, I hate how much of a piece of shit Kevin Spacey turned out to be. He was in so many good movies. I can’t even bring myself to watch any of them anymore. Except Baby Driver, because he dies in it.

New birds heard:

None, I was inside. =)
