My Year of Binchy – Week 48: A Reading Dilemma (Solved!)

Here is a list on Bookshop.org with all the Maeve Binchy books I’ve read all year.

Monday, November 25
  • Book: Quentins
  • Chapters: I’m finishing this
  • Location: Front room, it’s dreary out
  • Smoking: it came from a jar
What I’m listening to:
Did I cry?

Yes. There was a wedding and the twins sang and it got me. It got me good. They are just so pure.

Thoughts while reading (could be about the book, could not):

Okay, so re: today’s smoke.

Yeah, it came from a jar. Okay, so my friend was in town for work and it turns out me and their partner speak the same ouid language. We had late night stoop time a couple of the nights that they were here.

Before the second night, my friend’s partner messaged me and said, “Hey, so my friend is from here too and his mom is a garderner— like a fruit a vegetable and flower gardener, not like a ouid smoker. She tried growing marijuana plants to see if she could and, yeah, she could and she sold me a jar with like two ounces for like 20 bucks. I’m gonna go back and see if I can get another one.”

”Ohh, see if you can get me one too and I’ll pay you back!”

And now I have a jar of backyard ouid and it is pretty spectacular.

Okay, so also, I have a dillema to face when I finish this book. A book is on it’s way to me that was written by one of my other favorite authors, Marisha Pessl. She wrote my most-recommended book of all time Special Topics in Calamity Physics. Hell, it is also my favorite book probably.

She doesn’t write books very often, so when she does I jump on them. I always pre-order, from the second I finished Special Topics for the first time, I knew I wanted to read every single word this person ever wrote. And I have.

My preorder of her last book, Neverwold Wake came with a notebook and a poster that I still have. I don’t think I got anything with Night Film. And I don’t think I get anything special with my Darkly pre-order.

But it’s arriving this week. Like tomorrow.

I’m considering pausing the Binchy to read it. But then also, I was thinking about starting next year with a reread of my favorites and that would be a good way to start. (I know it wouldn’t be a re-read, but it would be a fresh read of someone I know I will always love.)

Hmm, things to think about. For now, I will finish Quentins, by Maeve Binchy.

I’m done and this book wraps up so neatly with a bow.

Oh and Don Richardson is a shit and I hope he stays in jail for a very long time. Maeve Binchy is so good at writing hateable men.

Tuesday, November 19
  • Book: Nights of Rain and Stars
  • Chapters: 1 – 4
  • Location: Front stoop, it’s about 40 degrees and not windy and not humid, plus I have coffee from Qazazz.
  • Smoking: A nug from a literal jar of mystery ouid
What I’m listening to:
Did I cry?

Yes! At a moment in the very beginning when a group of strangers came together after a tragedy.

Thoughts while reading (could be about the book, could not):

Welp, looks like the decision was made for me because my book didn’t arrive yet.

Also, I don’t remember anything about Nights of Rain and Stars, so it will be like reading a brand new book!

I like the cover says this is specially designed for comfortable reading. I will report back if it actually is.

And if the book is good or not, of course. But it will be. It’s Maeve Binchy, after all.

ok brb reading

This book starts with a bang, litereally. After reading a bit, it feels vaguely familiar, but my brain can’t grasp onto any of the characters or story yet. So, it will be an adventure.

This book cameout at the time when I was reading Maeve Binchy in real time, so I might have a bit of a grudge about it because it is not about the same people her last few books were about and I miss them.

Because I do. I want to read more about the Twins and Muttie and Lizzie and Hooves. I want a book JUST about them.

But now I am reading about Greece, so we’ll see how this goes!

Sunday, December 1
  • Book: Nights of Rain and Stars
  • Chapters: 5-9
  • Location: Inside the front room. It is 32 out and windy enough that I don’t want to get all geared up to go outside
  • Smoking: nothing, y’all.
What I’m listening to:
Did I cry?

Nope

Thoughts while reading (could be about the book, could not):

Thanksgiving was chill. It snowed. I made a roast beef and carrots and potatoes that we ate for two days.

We had a Dolly Parton pie.

No drama, no fighting, no Trumpers. It was quite and nice and we watched two very good movies.

Now I am going to listen to some very good music, drink some very good knockoff cherry coke zero, and read a very good book.

Yeah, I barely recall this book at all. It’s a great story so far. It opens with a big tragedy that brings together people from all over the world.

As they meet each other, we meet them and it’s really beautiful.

New birds heard:

no birbs.
