My Year of Binchy – Week 53: The Sad Thing Happened

Here is a list on Bookshop.org with all the Maeve Binchy books I’ve read/am reading all year.

Wednesday, January 1
  • Book: Minding Frankie
  • Chapters: the end
  • Location: front room
  • Smoking: mishmash
What I’m listening to:
Did I cry?

Yes.

Thoughts while reading (could be about the book, could not):

Okay, so I was planning to listen to The Leftovers 1+2+3 today, my first reading day of the new year. However, as I was setting up, my brain kept pushing songs from the Hacks soundtrack into my head, so I’m listening.

To both the soundtrack and my brain.

Our NYE was very chill; we watched two episodes of Aussie Survivor with Aubz and then watched a horror movie, and an episode of Bob’s Burgers, played some video games (Dredge for me, Cyberpunk for Mickey), and went to bed.

It was chill, it was nice, and now I’m gonna stop avoiding the end of this book.

Oh, man, that penultimate (I’m assuming) chapter might be the saddest chapter of any book I’ve ever read. The thing I was avoiding reading for happened and I had tears almost the entire chapter.

I don’t know why this always hits me so hard. Maybe because I never really grieved my dad, because I didn’t know how to. I don’t think anyone around me did either. Does anyone, though?

I dunno, the Irish seem to have their shit together.

I’m gonna go wipe my eyes, blow my nose, smoke a bowl, and finish the last chapter of this book.

Okay, nothing nearly as sad happened, but I am sad for this book to be over. There were a ton of romantic couplings in the end.

Saturday, January 4
  • Book: A Week In Winter
  • Chapters: the beginning
  • Location: Front room
  • Smoking: A Fruit Punch Liquid Diamonds infused preroll
What I’m listening to:
Did I cry?

Yes, at the naming of a twin. (not THE twins, tho)

Thoughts while reading (could be about the book, could not):

I know I have said this about a couple of books during this journey, but I do not recall this one at all. Now, I am hoping that means no one that I already love is going to surprise die on me. I can’t go through that again, y’all.

I’m worried about the twins the most, but she won’t kill them, right? RIGHT?!

Okay, so this is gonna be my final book in the Binchy series! I have Sister Caravaggio to read still and Whitethorn Woods, which I skipped somehow. I will read those this year sprinkled somewhere where it feels right.

Lemme start this book.

Okay, I’m into this. I initially gave it the side eye because I thought it was gonna be set in the United States, and I was NOT about that. However, two chapters in and we are happily set in Ireland, and I’m a happy reader.

There have been no Simon and Maud appearances yet, but the restaurant Maud works at with her fiance has been mentioned, so it might happen! I’d love just a final glimpse at what these lovelies are up to.

This book is kind of a hidden life/business-building book. Chicky ran away to America with a fella and lived one life but told the folks back home about a completely different one. Now it’s years later, and she’s moved back home to open a small hotel.

I love reading about people building things. And people discovering their powers. And powers don’t have to be, like, superhero things, you know. Powers are human things like gaining confidence in your skills or realzing you are deserving of real love. That is true power.
