Review: A Complete Unknown (2024)

In 1961, an unknown 19-year-old Bob Dylan arrives in New York City with his guitar and forges relationships with musical icons on his meteoric rise, culminating in a groundbreaking performance that reverberates around the world.

This was fantastic. I’m a sucker for musical biopocs, so I knew I would love it.

My friend Nick Pupo also has excellent taste in roles, so I knew he wouldn’t let me down.

The first time I saw Nick, he was on stage, telling jokes. That’s how I met a lot of people that I love, honestly. Then he followed his dreams, so I didn’t get to see him on stage as much anymore. That’s okay, though, because I began to see him onscreen instead.

First was the small screen – Halt and Catch Fire on AMC (which is seriously one of the best television shows of the last couple of decades, if you haven’t seen it already.)

Then he randomly showed up behind a video store counter on The Goldbergs.

In 2022, we got Pupo’ed twice with a Julia Roberts vehicle (Gaslit – AMAZING and on Apple TV) and a miniseries about the making of The Godfather called The Offer that was spectacular. It’s streaming on Paramount Plus.

2024 gave us Daisy Jones and the Six, another Nick Pupo vehicle… available on Amazon Prime.

But this year, this was the year we got to see Pupo on the big screen.

He played Peter Yarrow in A Complete Unkown.

And it was fabulous. As a movie, it hit all the notes: gorgeous to look at, incredible performances, magnificently accurate costumes, all of it.

It told a story that I was a bit familiar with about a person who movies have been made about before. In fact, Timothee Chalamet isn’t even the first person to be nominated for an Academy Award for playing Bob Dylan – The iconic Cate Blanchett was.

Timothee Chalamet deserves it, though. He disappeared into Bob Dylan completely. The biopic performances are STRONG this year, y’all.

Nick Pupo was also wonderful.

It was wild to see my friend’s name in the credits, too!

Yeah, this isn’t really a review as much as it is a gush, lol.
