‘Sleep’ing with Max Richter: Month 7

I know this is kind of late. That’s partly because I’ve had a lot of stuff going on this month already. There’s more where that came from, too. Yesterday, I took myself out to the Baller game. (yes, I mean BALLER game.) (and also, if we’re being honest, Mickey bought me the ticket for my birthday, so I took myself out to the Baller game on his dime.)

And the other part is… this is just going well. And by this, I mean, listening to as much of the 8.5-hour piece titled “Sleep” by Max Richter during my sleepytime, uh, time. Normally I make it to at least 7.5 hours, which is up significantly from 10 years ago when I was happy with 5.

The Playlist:

Sleep is really important to me. And I notice the better sleep I get, the nicer my brain is to me. So when I start getting spun up about something, I reflect on my sleep the night before. If I slept badly, then I know not to listen to that part of my brain so closely, because it is tired and just acting out.

The hardest part has been shutting up my brain while I try to fall asleep. And I’ve solved that with extreme focus on a single phrase. They vary every night depending on what sort of vibes I’m going after. They all start with “Show me…”

Are these mantras? Am I meditating? IDK, but it’s working.

Here are some dreams I remembered well enough to write down:

  • None.
    • Again.
    • Like, I can grasp at them, but they are mostly gone by the time I wake up.
    • I will say this:
      • I woke up from an amazing dream.
        • No, I do not remember what it was or who was involved.
          • I just know I woke up happy.
      • Then I got sad, because what happens to the people I was just having fun with when I wake up?
        • They disappear.
        • Never to be seen again.
        • And that is sad.

I will try to be better at remembering my dreams. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to share with me in that regard?
