Vice List – April 2024: Galeffi, Plops, and Meat Pies

First up, y’all know my number one vice is television and I am happy to report that one of my favorite dealers (AppleTV+) just reupped one of my favorite items. For All Mankind is coming back for season 5, y’all.

If you haven’t watched this show, it is one of my favorite period dramas since Mad Men. I would put it at the same level. The characters, the costumes, the vibe, the story. All of it.

Here is how much I love this show: When we first moved to Michigan, we had to buy some different weight jackets. At Target one day, they had a big ol’ clearance sale where I bought two verycheap jogging suit-weight jackets: one was burgundy and white with the Cherry Coke logo emblazoned on the back and breast.

The other was navy blue and white with the NASA “worm” logo in those same places. Last year, I wore the Cherry Coke one pretty frequently.

Ever since I watched For All Mankind, I reach for the NASA one every time. The Cherry Coke one hasn’t made it out of the closet in months.

Standout Food:

Oatmeal Plops

No photo of these because they are ugly but delicious.

So, we found ourselves relying pretty heavily on store-brand granola bars to snack on at night when we get a sweet tooth. We have more time than money coming in this month, so we decided to make them ourselves.

We’ve been through the process three times now and have learned some things.

The first thing is: keep these simple. The last batch we made had about 187 ingredients in it and they were not my favorite batch. So the next one we’re keeping simple:

  • Butter
  • Honey
  • Brown Sugar (these three get cooked together in a pan until we have an almost caramel consistency)
  • Oats
  • Almond slivers
  • Cranberries
  • Seeds of some sort

Then just mix it all up into a bowl and then press into a pan. Mickey eats them like bars or shaped items. I eat mine piece by piece like I am a little bird or something.

Meat Pies and Papas Bravas from Motor City Meat Pies.

We ate the meat pies too fast so there are no photos. I got this pic of the delicious Paps Bravas, though. Okay, so this place opened up last month across the street from my ceramics class. So on alternating Wednesdays, I’ll drop in and get Mickey and me lunch. Right now while he is unemployed, this and a trip to the local Coney Island are two of our “treats” every week.

On the weeks we don’t get meat pies from Motor City Meat Pies, I’ll swing by Moscheks for something from their hot food case for lunch and something to cook later that night. I live for their Swedish meatballs.

Which just so happened to be the first pie I tried from Motor City Meat Pies and it was DELICIOUS. So far we have tried that one, the lamb shepherd’s pie, the chicken bacon & green onion, and the special London meat pie.

Every pie is fried to order and flaky as hell, y’all. The fillings are rich and flavorful and I honestly wish I was eating one right now.

Sunday Hashbrowns and Coffee at Triangle Coney Island

Another new tradition! Well, as of this writing, we only did this twice.

We walk about a mile into Allen Park and have some really good coffee and share a plate of hashbrowns that I didn’t have to cook myself.

Their coffee is A+ diner coffee.

And the cast and crew at this particular location is something else.

Standout Drinks:

Galeffi Effervescente

So, we randomly got this stuff at a local Italian market. I was there to get you-bake pizza of course. It is one of my favorite treats.

Galeffi are these lightly bubbly, lightly lemon-y pellet-y things that you can add to water.

I enjoyed them a lot and we finished the whole jar in, like, a week. I’ll be on the lookout for more similar things in the future.

Standout Smoke:

White Runtz

Did I write about this one already? I don’t care if I did, I’ll do it again. It is one of the best strains for productivity that I’ve found recently. I found myself cleaning or writing almost as if I am on autopilot. It is amazing and I love it.

Standout Video Games

Outer Worlds

Mickey was playing this on the PS5 while I replayed it on my Switch. It was a nice time. I like the art in this game muchly.

Books I’m Reading that Aren’t Maeve Binchy

NONE. But I have been reading lots of articles and information about the lovely state I live in.
