Watch List – 5/12-18: Thank you, Sal Saperstein (+ ‘Sinners’)

Television

Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney (Netflix)

My friend gave me a Netflix login so that I could watch this, and I’m so glad he did.

  1. It’s a fucking oddly charming and awkward funny show.
  2. It hits what is probably my favorite funny bone: curiosity?
  3. The guests are top-tier.
  4. At least one musical guest has brought me to tears.
  5. Mandal, one of my absolute favorite independent comedians, is the warm-up comedian on this show.

When I figured out number 5, my brain kind of short-circuited. I saw Mandal on my television, and my brain went through all the possible celebrities it could be. But then, no, my brain insisted that it was Mandal. And then John Mulaney said, “My warm-up comedian, Mandal,” and everything was right with the world.

This is the world I want to live in: one where I see truly talented, creative people like Mandal doing the damn thing.

This show is chaotic. I can’t wait to watch it live this week.

The Four Seasons (Netflix)

I had some furniture to build, and I adore Colman Domingo, so I put this on.

It is funny, but it also makes me sad.

It’s just a bunch of people afraid to be honest with each other.

Sad. Life shouldn’t be like that.

All the performances are great, amazing, and hysterical.

My favorite is Kerry Kenney-Silver as Anne. I love this woman in literally anything you put her in.

My newest kink is recasting “Oh, Mary!” and I would love to see her as Mary, please.

The Studio S1E8&9 (Apple TV+)

I’d like to thank Sal Sapperstein. Thank you, Sal.

They recreated an entire damn awards show. Oh, how I wish I were part of the production for this episode. I fear there is no one better equipped than I for this particular challenge.

Like, I knew I would enjoy this show. I didn’t know how just how hard I would fall in love, though.

Episode 9 was fantastic. I laughed so hard. Seth Rogen is incredible. Bryan Cranston couldn’t be better. Catherine O’Hara and Kathryn Hahn were perfection. I’ve also fallen in love with newcomers (to me) Ike Barinholtz and Chase Sui Waters. The Emmys are gonna be so full of talent this year.

The Rehearsal S2E5

The podcast is where you’ll get the good views on this thought-provoking show.

24 in 24 S2E2 (Hulu)

I’ma keep up on this one and see how the chefs I give a shit about do.

Dimension 20: Unsleeping City

There was a holiday episode!

Smartypants S2E6 (Dropout TV)
  • Vinny Thomas
    • Who takes over after humans “retire”? (retire = become extinct)
  • Ryan Barton
    • I love anime dating profiles (or something similar)
  • Katie Marovitch
    • A complete guide to being the best guest.

All of these were wonderful. Vinny and Ryan opened my mind, but Katie provided a presentation chock-full of good advice.

Movies

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (Paramount+)

It was really fun to see the effects of all that D&D we’ve been watching on Dropout. I could “see” the saving throws and the “wild magic” and all of it.

Sinners – 2025 (Theater)

Wow. Movie of the year.

The dance scene left me breathless, and the soundtrack is perfection.

Our boy Ludwig has done it again.
