Watch List 7/7 – 15: Another Confession + Two Games (One Changed, One Squid) + Quick Emmy Nom Thoughts

Confession:

Should we start each TV blog with a confession now? I dunno, it seems fun.

Here is my confession for this week:

I love tuna salad. I eat it for dinner at least one night a week and for lunch, twice. At least.

What do I put in mine? Well, tuna, obviously. But also Duke’s Mayo, Original Red Pelican Traditional Yellow Mustard (Detroit Classic since 1923… almost as old as our house!), Dill Relish, garlic powder, onion powder, a little turmeric, a little salt, and so much black pepper I should be a walking sneeze.

I like it best on Light Rye Toast, but any bread is perfect.

What is my tuna salad missing? The yellow mustard was a recent addition, and I’m never looking back. Maybe your suggestion will similarly change my tuna salad game. Give it to me; I am ready for it.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Season 17 Premiere (Hulu)

I have been awaiting this crossover for forever, it feels like. It was … fine? IMO, the Abbott Elementary entry was stronger.

Don’t get me wrong, I laughed a LOT. It was weird to see the Gang in their normal setting but with sitcom lighting. I bet the other episodes feel even grittier in comparison.

I would have liked to see the Abbott folks spend more time in the Sunny world, but it was more of them in the school.

I would honestly take one episode like this per season for both shows! Come on TV Gods, let’s do it!

Game Changer (Dropout)

Same Reich, Owner of Dropout.TV and host of Game Changer, made a social media post to watch this epsiode as close to live as possible. And if not live, stay off social media until you watch it.

Of course, we watched live. But did we need to?

I don’t think so, but I also understand why he put out the warning. A bit was bitted that might make a whole heck of a lot of people sad if they didn’t know it was a bit.

That said, I would put this episode in the lower tiers of this season. It was fine, better than most normal television, but not the best Game Changer can give us. That’s totally fine, though. Humans aren’t always expected to be at their best at all times, and humans make this show, so…

I do very much appreciate what this episode did from a marketing standpoint. I’m interested to come back in a month and see which bit is doing best. My guess? BLeeM’s shoe-focused entry or Katie’s incredible Van game.

There’s no discounting a successful taste test of three of your friend’s breast milks, though.

Squid Game (Netflix)

I enjoyed every single season of this show. Good writing, good acting, good action, kept my attention the entire time.

The Circle Seasons 6 & 7 (Netflix)

You know what? I thought I would hate the AI contestant, but I found him to be quite charming. I did not enjoy the contestants obsession with figuring out who the AI was. It felt like the rest of the game and strategy came to a halt. Meh. Boring.

Season 6 was infinitely better than season 7. I have yelled at the screen WAY MORE in season 7, though.

Too Much (Netflix)

Bro, this is great. I am watching because of Megan Statler. I am an episode and a half in and I love the vibe. The dialogue is cracking and the guest stars are starring.

Meg is, as I expected her to be, a FORCE. She sparkles onscreen, and I can’t wait to see more of her vulnerability.

The Bear (Hulu)

My Emmy Nomination Thoughts
  • First off, I legit teared up when I saw Jeff Hiller get nominated for Somebody, Somewhere. Never in a million years did I think this would happen and it’s incredibly well-deserved. I will miss getting to see all of them so much. (yes, I know I can rewatch)
  • Fantasmas got a nom for best Hairstyling!
  • Robby Hoffman got a Best Guest Actress in a Comedy for Hacks!
  • Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese both got acting nominations for The Studio
  • I mean, hell yeah to all The Studio love in general.
  • Love seeing Andor in the Best Drama race
  • Harrison Ford is a first-time Emmy nominee in what I think is his very best work of all time ever, end of story (Shrinking)
  • WOOHOO JANELLE JAMES!!!!!!
  • Oh, and of course, Severance deserves every bit of love it got and then some.
  • Parker Posey, Emmy Nominee. I called it when I heard she was cast. I am thrilled.
  • Ayo Edibiri double nominee – directing and acting! She wrote an episode this year, I bet she gets a writing nod next!
  • The Rehearsal got four nominations
