Watch List – August 19-25: The Enthusiastic Boys

Television

The Boys Season 4 (Amazon Prime)

This is probably my favorite superhero vehicle.

I love the same thing about this show that I do about The Other Two. It has no problem poking fun at the industry that the show is set in. In The Other Two – that’s Hollywood. And in The Boys, it’s superheroes, but also Hollywood to an extent.

The characters are all easily distinguishable, and the story always keeps me guessing.

I love everyone AS A CHARACTER. Even the bad guys – everyone is so wholly realized down to the motivations of why they are taking the actions that infuriate me while I’m watching them. They showed me the roots of why the characters are the way they are, making it easy for me to feel sympathy for them.

The parallels between this show and what is currently happening in America are terrifying. Even more terrifying is that people actually ROOT for Homelander and his crew.

Speaking of his crew, Susan Heyward as Sister Sage is INCREDIBLE in this role. If anyone were to get any award recognition for this show (aside from the impeccable writing, directing, and stunt teams), it would be her.

She’s perfectly sly when she’s brilliant and a delightful, gently sloppy mess when she’s “under the influence” – I put that in quotes, but if you’ve watched season 4, you know what I mean.

And also, I think Chace Crawford is so good as The Deep.

Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 12 (MAX)

Welp, it’s the end of Larry and Leon and Suzy and the rest. I expect more of the same, which is to say – I will love it.

I will cry-laugh at least once. And a quote from the show will worm its way into my lexicon.

I will report back when I am done.

I am done, and of course, I adored the whole season, especially Leon.

I did indeed cry-laugh once but have forgotten why.

Additionally, the word “cordial” has been making appearances in my vocabulary a lot. I blame this show.

Top Chef (Peacock)

Okay, so Holland America laid out some cashe for this season, didn’t they?

This show does inspire me to cook, though. I think I’m going to try to do a pave someday soon. I just need to find a mandoline-style device that will not slice off my fingertip. I did that once, and I will never attempt that style of cutting device again.

I finished this and it was fine. The winner was fine. I understood why he won. Kristen Kish was an excellent host.

I will probably watch the next season week to week. I think it might be more exciting that way.

Australian TV (Or Dropout TV)

Gods of Food (Dropout TV)

I watched an episode that focused on a food scientist who asked questions like:

”Soup? What’s impressive or dangerous about that?”

and

”Can I make food… smarter?”

And I can’t even with this show. It is a perfect send-up of the unnecessarily fussy food documentaries. It’s beautifully shot, exactly like a food show would be. The sounds, the music. It’s all perfect.

I mean, I’m watching a Richard Blais. He was one of the food chefs who got me interested in molecular gastronomy.

And then there’s this guy:

He’s been in all three episodes I’ve watched thus far, and I’m pretty sure it’s the same clip every time.

And honestly, that feels like it also tracks for food shows.

I love it. I wish there were other shows this smartly satirical. This is definitely gonna have me looking closer at the scripted programming on Dropout TV.

Oh, god, now I am watching an episode about the “sad baker” and I am cry-laughing and I am not even high one bit.
