Watch List – April 1-7, 2024: Blown Away by Wrestlemania

Television

Blown Away (Netflix)

This is the last thing we’re watching before our Netflix subscription expires on April 11.

There is a new host this year and I am happy for that. The original host was all wrong.

The show is not that great, if I’m being honest, but the art at the end is spectacular. I really don’t care who wins or loses I just want to see the art.

So far I’ve seen an incredible realistic baseball bat and ball, and adorable toaster and bathtub buddy set, and venus fly traps eating cheetos. I love seeing into these artists minds!

Palm Royale (AppleTV+)

Carol Burnett is barely saying anything but she is making me laugh (and feel) so much. I’m still enjoying this show muchly, but it’s not “must see” TV. It’s not occupying my thoughts of anything – it’s just fun!

And the costumes are incredible.

And Leslie Bibb is giving the performance of her LIFE!

So You Think You Can Dance (Hulu)

No episode this week and I was sad.

The Americans (Hulu)

This show truly has some of the best writing and the best characters of any show I’ve seen. And I’ve watched a LOT of television, y’all. I am fully invested into everyone, even the characters I do not like.

This feels like Mad Men, where I don’t want it to end. I want to spend time with these people a few times a year until I die, at least.

I could make a whole list of shows I want to still hang out with. OOH MAYBE I SHOULD!

Survivor Season 46 (Paramount Plus)

I am just not excited about watching this show anymore. In fact, if I weren’t doing this podcast with Molls, I probably wouldn’t even watch this season. It is that painful for my brain.

Here comes the word vomit:

  • No one cares about your Shot in the Dark, Moriah
  • No one cares any any shots in the dark
  • Maybe it’s just me who doesn’t care?
  • Kenzie’s smile reminds me of someone but I can’t place who
  • Merge or Mergatory, let’s see.
  • Tiffany naming her idol “Idolicia” is kind of adorable
  • I do like these riddles a bit. It lets me see into the way the castaways brains think
  • Did Hunter now notice the word “knot” in that riddle, though? I feel like that was important
  • Okay maybe not
  • I still don’t know half of these people it seems
  • ”Buffless”
  • Q reminds me of people I went to High School with
  • I am interested to see Venus actually play Survivor now
  • They are giving Q so much attention this episode – he is either getting voted out or the reason someone else gets voted out
  • No reward for this fake merge
  • New individual idol looks…
  • Obstacle course to build a puzzle. Whoopty do.
  • I like that everyone has to do a section of the puzzle
  • Oh wait it is an “in addition reward”. Bleh .
  • Tiffany got the grey rock
  • Everyone on the orange team giving their heights was kind of cute
  • This mud looks extra gross today
  • Those net obstacle course things are really frightening to me. I can see one million ways to get injured.
  • I don’t know why but I just don’t feel any tension in these challenges any longer. I guess because they are basically the variation on a tune every single episode
  • The amount of times they are trotting out old player names or seasons seems like they are up to something. A survivor network maybe? I don’t know, but it needs to be done with a lighter hand.
  • I hope Venus makes it through. She is growing on me.
  • At least they get a kind of proper feast. It would be a great opportunity to give them photos or letters from home to get to know them on a personal level.
  • OOh maybe we won’t have a journey this episode
  • This dumb ass tribal council set angers me so much
  • WE DIDN’T HAVE A JOURNEY
  • Unless it is a mid-tribal journey. I should delete this. I don’t want to give Jeff any ideas.
  • It is so hard to keep track of who has what advantage.
  • Oh, Moriah just played her Shot in the Dark
  • It did not save her. That is fine I guess.
  • Moriah is gone. Oh well.

bleh. Until next week. Ooh two people going home next week. I wonder what convoluted way they will make that happen.

Saturday Night Live (Peacock)

The Riz Ahmed episode had one of the best monologues all season. Too bad the rest of the show didn’t perform as well.

This episode was one of the ones where I thought they had a lot of good concepts, but the sketches didn’t pan out. I bet the writer’s room for this episode was better than the episode.

How do I get a ticket to THAT?!

Also, my love for Sarah Sherman and the Please Don’t Destroy boys is burning strong.

The Great Pottery Throwdown (Max)

THEY MADE GNOMES!!!!!

Abbott Elementary (Hulu)

No new show again this week. I guess, the basketball players are having some sort of mental health crisis or something. Is that what March Madness is? It isn’t even March anymore!

C’mon, ABC, I need my Ava!

However, the fact that this show didn’t air last week led to a conversation with my friend Eddie, who I don’t talk to nearly enough anymore, so it worked out well in the end.

Australian TV

Survivor Season 6 (or 8 depending who you ask): Brains vs. Brawn

Watching this with a new person is so much fun. Now I have two new folks! One (Aubrey) is new to Australian Survivor altogether. The other (Mickey) has watched the most recent season, but not either of the two that I trot out as my “Australian Survivor School”.

It’s difficult for me to not yell out about the people I love or the things that delight me about each episode. It is, however, SO MUCH fun to watch/hear someone get into it as much as I do. I love it when someone “gets” it.

Movies

The Zone of Interest (Max)

This was a rewatch. I saw this in the theater alone during Oscar season. I thought then and still think it is a vitally important piece of art that a lot of people aren’t gonna “get” right away. This is scary to me, but indicative of our times.

The director is still getting all sorts of shit for his Oscar acceptance speech.

Again, I can’t recommend this movie to anyone, but I think everyone should watch it.

It hit even harder on a second viewing for me.

Other

Kyle Kinane – Dirt Nap (YouTube)

I love stand-up comedy. Even more than that, I love the indie stuff that isn’t selling out stadiums and telling jokes for tens of thousands of people. Cause here’s my thinking – if you’re writing jokes to please the masses, they’re gonna be generic and broad and not take any work to “get”.

I like a comedian who challenges me a bit – one where I can see their brain working on state, which in turn makes my brain work to ensure that I get all the jokes on all the levels – because a good joke should have more than one to tickle my brain.

Kyle Kinane’s Dirt Nap is all of that and more. I found myself both “huh”-ing and belly-laughing, which is my favorite form of comedy. His work was original and reminded me of why I love live comedy so much.

My favorite part of this special was his Fast and the Furious bit. If you have ever watched a FAF movie – or ridden the ride – or watched a preview, I think the joke will translate – it’s that good.

Support Indie comedy.

Wrestlemania

Yeah, I like wrestling. The big events, at least. And the Rumble Rumble the most.

Here are some things I noticed about Wrestlemania.

The winner of the women’s 3 on 3 match threw out a P-Valley reference after their win. 3 bad bitches indeed.

I love seeing Weezy and rooted on his team, of course.

Finally, I found the Rock’s entrance to be extremely disappointing. One might even call it mid.

(these were just my thoughts after Saturday. I’ma watch Sunday, too)

Sunday Night

Seth Rollins’ entrance was incredible. It got me hype. I don’t want to like him but I can’t help it.

Damien Priest’s outfit was gorgeous to look at. He swooped in with a swiftness and won that belt. I used to work with his dad and it’s been so fun to watch Damien’s rise!

Mickey: Everyone has a goddamned belt.

Snoop Dogg is an incredible announcer.

Scud the Disposable Assassin 30th Anniversary (SchrabHomeVideo)

I cannot explain Rob Schrab to another human and, honestly, no one should ever try to do it. It’s impossible.

All you need to know for this entry is that this man has one of my favorite brains in the world and he wrote an absolutely beautiful comic named Scud The Disposable Assassin. This comic had their 30th anniversary on Sunday and Rob celebrated with an online event.
