Watch List – May 6-12: MASHACKS

Television

M*A*S*H (Hulu)

I have never watched this before – aside from the finale, because I am a student of television after all.

After we had the happy happy time of Game Changer (and its excellent host Sam Reich), we decided to take the M*A*S*H trip. I knew of it tangentially, have watched the end of the “chicken” episode a lot, and knew of it’s importance in TV history.

We are almost done with season 1 and I have thoughts. Here they are.

Hawkeye and Trapper are assholes. Hawkeye especially. Almost every episode they do something to trick, hurt, gaslight, mislead, or worse someone else. Oftentimes it is Frank who, while, yes he’s cheating on his wife with Hot Lips, otherwise just seems to want to do his job to the best of his ability and the rules set forth to him.

I understand that Hawkeye and Trapper do good. Bot not all of their schemes end up with good being done.

Henry is a terrible boss. He seems to want to do the bare minimum to keep his team running and often does things without thinking them through or considering things all the way.

There is so much outright sexual harassment. Now, I don’t know if this is some sort of Mad Men thing where they are trying to show us what it was like to live during that time or something else. However, to me, as a grown up woman in the 2020s, it feels like they were meant to be jokes that the audience could laugh along to.

I am not laughing, though. It just makes me feel small and I can’t imagine what the women who grew up with this show on during the formative years of their life must have felt about them. It really makes you examine your place in the world when you hear joke after joke reducing you to an object.

Old news, I know, but it’s still wild how much of it there is in this show.

Another thing that I find jarring about the show is the way storylines don’t carry over from episode to episode. I know this was normal for the time, but my brain does not like it.

Okay, now that I have gotten all of my complaints out of the way (there will be more I’m sure), I will say that I am enjoying this show very much.

I love seeing parts of life that I wouldn’t normally get to see and meeting characters I wouldn’t normally get to meet.

The problem is, initially, I was crushing hard on Hawkeye (what can I say, young Alan Alda is a dreamboat), but then I started looking at all his actions, not just the “nice” stuff they had him do at the end of every episode. I guess it was their attempt to make the audience forget all the shitty ways he treated everyone else.

These are some conflicted characters, both for the writers and the viewers. It makes for a very talking-heavy watch for sure.

Oh and also, the laugh track can GTFO. I think it might be gone by season 2, but I have to pay attention.

Hacks (MAX)

This is a rewatch. I love Ava. I love Kayla. I love Kiki. And yes, I even love Deborah Vance. I’m rewatching seasons 1 & 2 so that my brain is ready for season 3, when it is complete.

This is one of the most inspiring shows I rewatch. It gets my creative brain spinning in the same way that Mad Men and For All Mankind do.

Also the soundtrack is an absolute banger. It’s great for road trips. Particularly in the California desert, near the Salton Sea where it feels like you’re the only human on the planet.

I’ll use this space for random thoughts about the show until I get to season 3 and then it will all be reacts!

Episode 3 and Kayla is still one of my favorite parts of this show. This summer Megan Statler (the actress that plays Kayla), Sarah Sherman (of SNL fame), and Patti Harrison (of I Think You Should Leave fame) toured together and I can only imagine how fun that show was.

Oh also… one of the things I love the most about this show is the emphasis it puts on the process of writing. How jokes are created. How it feels to bat around words with other people that love words. It was one of my favorite parts of the back porch of Bull & Bush back in the day.

One of the few things I miss about Orlando. I think they are all food and comedy related, now that I think about it.

Oh and Fringe.

Palm Royale (AppleTV+)

I did not make time for the final two episodes this week. Welp, guess it’ll be on the menu next week. But also, it does say a bit about the urgency of this show. If this were For All Mankind orAbbott Elementary, I’d be chomping a the bit for the next episode and the next episode and the next… you get it.

I know I’ll get to the end of this one and that’s okay with me.

Abbott Elementary (Hulu)

New episode this week! I am hype!!!

I AM SO FUCKING PROUD OF GREGORY. He did something extremely hard this week: he gracefully excused himself out of an awkward situation. And then standing his ground and being strong in his feelings and convictions. And then for following through. I really appreciated this about him tonight.

Janine’s story really resonated with me too, for a couple reasons. First, is the obvious connection of Janine not knowing who her father is, because I made a child with a person with the most generic, impossible to google name in the history of google. And this episode really made me think how that is such a missing piece in D’s life that I’m sorry I wasn’t able to give to her. I told her what I could, you know?

And the other part that resonated with me about Janine’s story is the way she got so wrapped up in thinking Kevin Hart could be her father. I mean, the red strings were there, y’all. I could see the connections too. But, I related, because I also let my imagination get away from me sometimes, playing out the endings of whole scenarios that haven’t happened yet, kind of like to try them on or something.

And in conclusion, Tariq being in charge of the PTA is hilarious and I’m excited to watch it play out.

So You Think You Can Dance (Hulu)

I don’t think I’ll watch another season of this unless they make massive changes. I had such high hopes, but this is hurting my heart.

Thing one: I want the camera to be on the dancing. The FULL routine. Not the judges dumb faces.

This opener had some decent energy. I like all the dancers, I just can’t remember any of their names.

Oh shit T-Pain is here! Woohoo!

I don’t like the emphasis they are putting on this dancer (Madison) pushing through the pain. I don’t think that is healthy. I remember one time in the middle of a recital D got hurt. She stayed backstage the rest of the show, no questions asked.

This is making me physically uncomfortable to watch. Also, I would think professionals would think it is important for their dancers to be healthy, right? If they are any sort of humans at all!

This piece with the cheap apartment lamps is pretty gorgeous.

We’re onto solos and the injured girl made it trhough without having to do one.

Easton likes spinning and throwing his limbs and body around. He certainly has his own style. I don’t connect with him emotionally, nor do I feel his connection to his music. I feel him trying, but it’s not there. It feels competition-y – all technique, no true passion.

Okay, now here is the emotional connection to the music and the audience that I am looking for. She has the technique too. I love this, which probably means the judges will send Mariyah home tonight.

Okay, Anthony. I like these vibes. This choreography feels fresh and inventive and I enjoy how he interprets the music. A+.

Who is leaving? Let’s see. I think it should be Easton. It was not. It was Mariyah. I was right.

I bet they just wanted to keep the sexes equal for whatever the top four is doing. (I hope they have moved past that thinking, but we’ll see).

Survivor Season 46 (Paramount Plus)

It is thursday night and I still haven’t watched this yet.

i am putting it off as long as possible until I cannot anymore. But I have to watch it for the podcast.

it is now friday and I am watching in anticipation of our podcast recording.

prepare for some unhappy word vomit:

p.s. spoilers abound

  • We’re starting with tears again. Today it is Kenzie
  • Ooh Charlie is a law student, interesting
  • I would like to point out the following
    • there are 7 people left in the game
    • 6 days left in the game
    • So that means we are on day 19
    • In Aussie Survivor, we just finished day 23 and they haven’t even made it to merge yet
  • Venus and Kenzie should team up
  • Again, I wish the rest of the show was edited as well as the credits
  • I maintain that Venus is the smartest player this season
  • It will come back to bite her, especially with an idol now
  • These idols are so dumb looking. Did they make them at summer camp?
  • If Venus goes home with an idol in her pocket, this season will be the one that had the most players go home with an idol in their pocket.
  • I don’t want Maria to win. She’s barely a castaway to me
  • The heat seems to be offa Q for now
  • Ugh I wish the other players would listen to Venus. I think she is so observant
  • I am somewhat enjoying Charlie’s end-game style so far – get it, swiftie
  • ”The final several” -ugh
  • Ball balancing obstacle course
  • In addition reward: pizza delivery
  • Everyone getting hit in the head with balls
  • I kind of like the snake puzzle
  • Venus ALMOST had it
  • Maria DID have it, boo
  • Ben is getting pizza
  • I think the editors might have done Maria dirty in the early season
  • Liz & Q playing rock, paper, scissors for pizza
  • Q WINS, I’m dying with laughter
  • What are the purple things beside Kenzie’s left eye? They look like colorful pimple patches
  • Q is cracking me up
  • This will be a bold statement, but I think it would be massively fun to watch Q play Australian Survivor
  • I agree with Liz’s allergy assessment – the link between mental and physical health is megastrong
  • They have said “king pin” so many times in this episode
  • Venus shouldn’t have teased an idol. That’s gonna get her voted out
  • Charlie: “here’s the Taylor Swift’s honest truth”
  • This jury looks so bitter
  • Jeffs with the movie snacks is fucking annoying. Popcorn, now licorice?
  • I think Venus will be a good jury member (I am assuming she is getting voted out by this point)
  • Oh thank god tonight is the last night they can use shot in the dark. the dumbest twist or whatever they want to call it
  • Does anyone on this tribe actually like each other?
  • Liz is a terrible talker
  • Am I …rooting on Q now?
  • Ben has no chance of winning, but he is still very chill
  • Who voted for Kenz? Was it chaotic Q? Or Ben?
  • Venise?
  • I’m sad to see Venus go, but think she should be pretty proud of how she played. I feel like she stayed true to herself.

Next time on Survivor: more Q chaos and the breaking up of Maria and Charlie

Oh if you want to hear me and molls work through our anger regarding this season, listen here.

Survivor Season 6 (or 8 depending who you ask): Brains vs. Brawn

We had a doubleheader this week and, again I say this has been very fun. And the wild thing, I know we are watching the lesser of the two seasons we watch during Australian Survivor School… and it’s already so so so good.

We lost one of my favorite “characters” of both seasons we watch in ASS (haha, that makes me laugh) and so I would like to take some time to talk about him.

On the surface, Simon is unlikable. He’s kind of cocky and comes off somewhat dumb. However, after watching him as much as I have over the past year, I have a real soft spot for this guy. It’s like I can feel where his insecurities are coming from.

Simon is like a puppy dog in that he just wants to make people happy. He works as hard as he can because that’s how he knows how to be accepted. That’s why he puts his literal all into challenges. He also blindly trusts those around him that he’s made deals with.

At least in his first season. I think watching his hurt play out on his next season is what really brought me to love and appreciate him.

Plus the bonus video clip we watch after the finale. That really gives me a warm feeling.

Movies

Y’all I didn’t watch a single movie this week.

Slip Casting Videos (YouTube)

Here is a weird thing I’ve been doing lately: watching 10-15 minute videos of production ceramics facilities. I love seeing what I do every Wednesday on a larger scale. I find it to be very relaxing.

I think I would be happy to work in a big production facility like this. I would want to do the cleaning up portion of events (which many people seem to not enjoy doing) and the glazing part. I would also love to learn the pouring part too.

I’m still afraid of the firing part, even though we are starting to build a backyard kiln by accident. I’m also on the lookout for a home wheel to play around with throwing and stuff.
