Watch List – November 4-10: My Old Ass All Along

Television

The Simpsons (Disney +)

We are still plugging along. We watched the episode where Lisa Simpson was president after Trump, which was weird to so in the week of the election.

Agatha All Along (Disney Plus)

This felt like it might be Aubrey Plaza’s dream role? She was perfectly cast and did exactly what she was asked to do.

Kathyrn Hahn was fantastic as always, but (and I know this is the autistic in me talking) it felt like she and the director didn’t share the same vision for the character at times. It was as if she didn’t believe in what she was doing. Not always—most of the time, she gave exactly what was needed. There were just other times when it felt like she wasn’t playing the character exactly like she wanted. She was holding something in, holding something back.

Sasheer Zamata was OUTSTANDING. I hope this opens more doors for her, because she has always been a MASSIVE talent. Like many women, especially women of color, SNL couldn’t figure out what to do with her. She was often reverted to traditional women roles and she’s much more than that.

Most women are, believe it or not.

I loved that there was casual queerness throughout this show and can’t wait for season 2.

Somebody Somewhere (MAX)

This show deals with hard stuff in a way that’s gentle but still serious.

I have a pretty hefty fear of going to the doctor. I wasn’t expecting a show to confront that particular fear for me.

p.s. I really like the Iceland guy.

Shrinking (AppleTV+)

This might be my favorite thing Christa B. Miller has done.

High Potential (ABC or Paramount +)

No new episode again. Puh.

Abbott Elementary (ABC / Hulu)

This was probably my favorite episode of the season thus far.

SNL (Peacock)

I had mixed feelings about the cold open, but the more I think about it, the more I like it. I only wish they would have twisted the satire knife even more.

Bill Burr’s monologue I did not love. There were some solid jokes, but some of it rubbed me the wrong way. Namely the woman jokes. It really felt grosss and kind of lazy. I know his brand of comedy is satire, but come on those jokes are like the same ones that could have been made 20+ years ago. Do better. You’re better than that, Bill Burr.

Oh in case it was not clear, I voted for Kamala. Not only that but I voted for the entire ticket and researched every single race. Like I do every single election.

Aside from Michael Che on Weekend Update, my favorite sketch was the dad/son phone call. It was very sweet and relatable for a lot of folks, I bet.

Surprisingly, there were many masculinity/therapy/ego jokes throughout the sketches. In a way, I feel like the sketches captured Bill Burr’s humor better than the monologue did.

Dead Like Me

Ugh, I wish this show was streaming. All of you should watch it. There are a lot of other shows that have my heart, but the only one that I can call my favorite is Dead Like Me. I am crying at least once each episode. Spending time with these people feels good.

I need to feel good right now however I can because I (like you) am living in a capitalistic hellscape. Also, I am still very sad.

Oh, I forgot that George and her dad had a breakfast thing when she was little. My dad and I did too. That’s why I love Waffle House so much.

Australian TV (Or Dropout TV)

Australian Survivor Heroes vs. Villains

Watching this was weird. It felt surreal.

Before we watch every night, I send Aubz and Molls an email with a link to our Streamyard room, so we can broadcast to Twitch and also a link to whatever episodes we’re watching that day.

This week, I only sent it to Aubz. And it felt weird.

Watching the episode was cathartic in a way (S10E13, if you’re keeping count). I was able to mention things Molls loved about the castaways or the episodes. And even stuff about my first experience watching it.

Aubz was great too. She didn’t force me to talk about anything and simply listened when I did.

Then Wednesday, in the hell aftermath of the election, a mystery package at my door that I will talk more about later this week. I started the blog last week, but my brain could not focus.

It’s still not doing great at it.

Dirty Laundry (Dropout TV)

This is just fun. Like hanging out with friends before bed.

Movies

My Old Ass (Amazon Prime)

The first half of this movie was great, and I was into it.

Here is the description from the pros:

An 18th-birthday mushroom trip brings Elliott face-to-face with her wisecracking 39-year-old self. When the older Elliott starts handing out warnings about what her younger self should and shouldn’t do, she realizes she has to rethink everything about family, love, and what’s becoming a transformative summer.

Solid-ass premise, right? The first half was so good. I was getting all hopeful for fresh(ish) ideas in movies again.

And then the second half let me down so much. I don’t know if everyone will have the same experience. But for me, it took something that could have been exciting and made it generic.

As always, Aubrey Plaza is fantastic. As was the actress who played young Aubrey, Maisy Stella.
