Watch List – September 9 – 15: Cursed Emmys

Television

Taxi (Paramount Plus)

Carol Kane as Simka is an actual goddess.

That’s really the only positive thing I have to say about Season 5.

They have lost their way with every single other character it feels.

This has been such a fun watch, regardless.

Any suggestion on what early 80s show we should watch next?

For All Mankind (Apple TV +)

Gordo & Tracy.

Season 2 of this show is almost perfect. There is one storyline that makes me extremely uncomfortable, but I understand why it is included.

I cry at in the first episode of this season when “Three Little Birds” is playing. I cry at the final episode multiple times.

I wish more people were watching this show. It’s such a well-rounded drama. I love it so much.

Abbott Elementary (Max)

Comfort rewatching Season 3 right before I go to bed. It’s not as good as the first two, but I still love it.

I love how this is a true ensemble cast.

Australian TV (Or Dropout TV)

Australian Survivor Heroes vs. Villains

The “Cookie Idol” has been introduced.

Also, yes, this might have accidentally become a Simon stan account somehow.

Ugh, the next two weeks are gonna be INCREDIBLE.

Movies

Civil War (MAX)

I have been looking forward to this movie for a while now. In fact, I was looking forward to its streaming release so much that I wrote it on my paper planner so that I wouldn’t forget. So, yesterday, on “No Type Friday” I made myself a lunch (read: heated up pre-made homemade lasagna from the local market) and settled in to watch Alex Garland’s newest movie.

I have previously very much enjoyed Alex Garland’s films, most notably Ex-Machina and Never Let Me Go. In fact, just thinking about NLMG has me feelin’ all despondent and empty inside. The way a good dystopian movie should have one feelin’, you know?

Civil War was a good movie. The cinematography was both crisp and gritty at the same time. All of the acting was near impeccable, particularly a terrifying Jesse Plemmons near the middle/end.

Civil War was a terrifying movie because we feel so close to this already.

Remember when Idiocracy first came out, and half the folks were laughing at it as something ridiculous, and the rest of us were like,”no man… this is where we are headed.”?

And then look at where we are now.

I don’t want to sound alarmist or nuts, but Civil War felt like that. Like, I imagine half of the folks watching this movie feel like it’s simply entertainment and not a warning, you know?

That said, my main takeaway from this movie is that it would have hit a lot harder for me had I not spent the earlier part of this year watching every single possible episode of The Walking Dead known to mankind.

This movie, with its “journalists capturing human horror,” had a real Fear the Walking Dead vibe. I felt like there were a lot of shots for shock value to horrify the viewer into taking action.

The story in Civil War was, of course, more fleshed out than FTWD could ever dream to be. But to me, the vibes felt like an extended episode of something in The Walking Dead Universe.

She’s All That (Paramount +)

Aubz and I watched She’s All That over on Twitch. This movie holds up pretty well and Freddy Prinze Jr. just has niceboi feels all around.

One of the things we talked about while we watched was how much 90s movies like this skewed our view of what romance actually is.

What other movies would you want to watch with us on Twitch? It’s a good time always.

Cursed Friends (Paramount +)

Mickey asked what I wanted to watch and I said something mindless and goofy, so we got to scrolling.

I had never heard of this movie before, but once I saw the premise, I knew this was it.

Four childhood friends, now in their 30s, awaken on Halloween after a drunken reunion and realize a future-predicting game of M.A.S.H. they played in 2002 has become their new reality.

When I was in school, I used to play the FUCK out of M.A.S.H. I used to put some weird stuff down, too, so if mine ever came to life, I’d be in for a weird time.

But then, watching this movie made me think – maybe mine DID come to life. Like I said, I used to like to write down really weird options. So I wouldn’t put it past myself to choose “Mickey Mouse” for my spouse.

And I was also impatient, so I probably would have only written “Mickey” on the line. Then, I mean, middle school Jacki would consider the Professor Haus to be a mansion, so that tracks, too. Then I thought about my occupation: writer (feels weird to say this), candymaker (yum), and artist (again, feels weird). All three of these would have filled out my occupation line in a M.A.S.H. game.

I’m just sayin’… it could be for real.

This movie was fun. It wasn’t great. It wasn’t bad. It just is. If you have a couple hours to kill and are feeling silly, I say go for it. Just don’t expect anything big and important out of it.

Just have fun.

  • Yay, Billy Crudup won. I just love The Morning Show getting awards. That show is fantastic.

    • Okay, but Billy Crudup’s speech is so amazing, supportive of his wife and the people that helped him create the character
    • He wrapped it up all cute, too
  • Watching commercials is so weird. No wonder old folks who only watch network television are so frightened.
