Watch List September: Tati, Theater, and Two Movies

Confession:

I think the feeling after seeing an incredible show with someone I love is my absolute favorite high.

I wrote this confession way back on 9/3, and my confession has changed.

New Confession:

I am cancelling Hulu and Disney+ because of what ABC has done to Jimmy Kimmel. That’s it, that’s all. What’s happening in the country right now is bullshit, and if you’re not scared, you’re not paying attention. Yes, I know he’s back, but I still don’t trust ’em, so they are gone.

New Confession:

I am gonna start making this more listy, and once a month. It is starting to feel like a demand, so I’m (in Ross Gellar voice) pivoting.

There is still a decent amount of babbling in this one, tho.

TV

Los Espookys (HBOMax)

Long live Tati. Whenever I watch this show, I don’t tell Mickey, “I’m going to go watch an episode of Los Espookys.” Instead, I say, “I’m gonna see what nonsense Tati gets into today.”

I don’t think that I have taken to a show this fast and this hard since I discovered Search Party and The Other Two.

I’m done with this and the cliffhanger at the end both energized me and made me viscerally angry. I loved it.

Tati spinoff, please?

Community (Peacock)

A perfect comfort show.

I think season 6 is one of the best seasons, hands down.

The Bear (Hulu)

No doubt, this is my favorite season of the entire series. In fact, I would be fine if it ended here. I know it won’t, but I think this would be a fine ending, which I guess it is for me, because I cancelled Hulu. I’m okay with this.

The Morning Show (Apple TV)

This is a rewatch, probably my 6th? I’ve seen this show a lot. It’s the best thing Reese has ever done. It hits differently every time I watch it, because my brain puts what’s happening on screen through a “what’s happening in real life” filter.

I like that this show takes on difficult topics, like the Me Too movement or Covid in a realistic way. I got annoyed when so many shows ignored Covid altogether, because I feel it will have an effect on how we remember that time. Like, there’s nothing to see, so we think “it wasn’t that bad or scary”. But it totally was and we need to remember that. Thanks to The Morning Show and P-Valley (which just wrapped season 3 FINALLY) for keeping things real.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what the new season tackles.

Silicon Valley (HBOMax)

Rewatch, good as hell. I am in love with Jared this watch through.

Movies

Freaky Tales (VOD)

This was FUN AS HELL. It was like the best Quentin Tarantino and Edgar Wright (who is always the best) had a baby and made a movie.

I would have titled it something different, though. Have you seen this? What do you think the title should be?

The Naked Gun – 2025 (VOD)

It did what it was supposed to do.

The Long Walk – 2025 (Theater)

This was incredible. So incredible, in fact, that it inspired me to write an article about Stephen King for Only In Your State.com. Additionally, Logan and I are going to be talking about this movie (and the book) next Wednesday at 2 pm!

Other

Color Theories by Julio Torres (Performance Space)

This show was the reason for the NYC trip, so it deserves a full review of its own. I tried to write this as fresh as I could after I saw it, so it’s pretty raw, y’all.

Hadestown (Walter Kerr Theater)

D told me that to see this show is to understand her as a person, so, of course, I went to see it. And it’s heavy, important stuff, so it also deserves its own review.

Hadestown (Teen Edition)

Our Persephone was angry (and it worked). Our Hermes was James Brown-y (and it totally worked).

And the youth from the ice cream stand delivered my favorite line in the whole show.

“I’m wonderin'” — just in case you’re, uh, wondering.
