What the HECK Am I Supposed to Do with My Hair While I Sleep?

Some things are happening on my head that I’d like to talk about.

Thing 1

I have a new set of baby hairs growing in all over the entirety of my skull. I think this is happening because I added saffron to my supplement regimen at the beginning of the year. That is the only major internal change I’ve made lately, so it must be it. Right? Have you taken saffron as a supplement and experienced the same thing? Or eaten it a lot and ended up with a thick, glorious mane?

So, yeah, my hair is getting thicker.

Thing 2

My hair is past my shoulders for the first time since we’ve moved up here. Normally, it gets to a point where I don’t like looking at my face with this dumb hair framing it, so I stop looking in a mirror until I decide to chop it off.

Yes, I cut it myself. Who knows my hair better than me? On days when I cut it well, NO ONE. On days when I end up with microbangs and a blunt bob, EVERYONE.

I haven’t done this in a while. Mostly out of laziness and eh-ness. I mean, who sees me anyways? Me? Puh. Mickey? I think he must see some version of me that lives in his imaginative head, not what is present in front of him. Kind of like he sees his ideal Jacki at all times or something.

I was getting ready to chop it all off again. Chin length and swingy, nothing too extreme. The hair that makes me feel like, well, me.

The Dilemma

Okay, so here’s where I am:

  • My hair is long. I was ready to cut it at the beginning of December, but I didn’t.
  • It is getting thicker.
  • I like my hair long.
  • If I can ever make it through this awkward stage.
  • I want to make it through this stage and have long, thick hair for a hot minute again.
  • And then chop it all off again,

Here’s the issue, though. I cannot stand long hair when I sleep.

Sure, I could put it up every night, but that causes breakage, and I don’t want breakage. If I’m growing my hair out, I want it all to get long and be smooth and undamaged. But I can’t do this if I can’t sleep on it.

Here are the things I do not enjoy about sleeping with long hair.

  • I lay on it with my head.
  • I lay on it with my body.
  • Worse, Mickey lays on it with his head.
  • Even worse, Mickey lays on it with his body.
  • It gets in my face.
  • Worse, it gets in my mouth
  • Even worse, it falls off my head and stays in my mouth

See? This is a lot to deal with when I’m trying to sleep. And I simply do not want to deal with it.

“But Jacki,” you may find yourself saying, “I’ve known you for a long time, and I have seen you with long hair. How did you deal with it then?”

Short answer: I didn’t. I didn’t consider my own comfort for so long that I just miserably slept, pulling on my own hair and getting all tangled up. When I was a kid, I also hated having my hair brushed in the morning, probably as a result of all the swirls I made in my hair overnight.

Nowadays, I protect my sleep at all costs, and I have a lot of things involved. Here is a short list:

  • Well-researched pillows for my side-sleepin’ ass.
  • Satin pillowcases to eliminate hair breakage.
  • Good, cooling sheets.
  • Good, Cooling mattress cover that is also waterproof because of night sweating.
  • On that note, good mattress. Don’t skimp on sleep, y’all (if you can afford it, ofc).
  • A cooling weighted blanket.
  • My favorite blanket that I am mad at in case that cooling blanket is too hot.
  • Galaxy lamp(s).
  • A very important playlist
    • This is new for 2025.
    • Previously, it was ocean sounds.
  • Oh, and TMI, but I almost always have at least one orgasm before sleep.

So, this hair thing is the only thing holding me back, y’all. So, I really want to solve it. For a short while, at least. I feel most like myself with short and swingy hair, but I want to dabble in long-haired luxury temporarily.

Yes, I have tried things. I’ve been through this rodeo before. Now, I will give you a list of what I have tried. Idk why I am being so announce-y in this blog, but that’s why my brain wants to do so, I’ll let it. Here’s what I tried:

  • A high ponytail
  • High pigtails
  • Low pigtails
  • Low buns
  • A high bun
  • Low (single) bun
  • Hip Hop buns
  • Braids
  • Curlers (of different varieties)
  • A bonnet
  • Just putting my bangs up

And there are a variety of reasons why these didn’t work, up to and including:

  • My hair had weird bends in it when I woke up that I was too lazy to fix.
  • My hair still pulled.
  • They fell out in the middle of the night, and I still had hair annoyances.
  • I had a sore head the next day.
  • It made me sweat.
  • It was too lumpy, and I couldn’t get comfortable.
  • My hair broke faster than normal/

So, I’m asking you… you long haired lovers, what do YOU do? How do you sleep at night? Please help me, I want to be one of you again for a short while.
