Yes, cursing is required. The Motor City is simply that incredible. One of my favorite hobbies is introducing someone new to the city.
As someone who recently moved here myself, I feel unqualified to love it this hard and yell about it this much. But also, I love discovering things.
Here’s the thing, though… you don’t even need to discover things in Detroit to fall in love. There’s just so much here.
Like sports? We got ‘em. Like, all of ‘em: football with the Lions, basketball with the Pistons, Red Wings Hockey, the Detroit City Football Club, and of course, my personal favorite, the Detroit Tigers. I love baseball, baybee. Always have, probably always will.
Love food? The Motor City is killing it. You can google (or Duck Duck Go or some other search engine that actually works) to find out the popular restaurants.
Me? I like taking folks to the local Coney Island (that’s what we call diners up here) or one of the many slider spots I’ve fallen in love with, or we’ll order in pizza.
And on your first visit, we’re going to Mugly’s. Ain’t no way around it.
Another thing I’ll show you if you come to visit? My yard. I love my yard. The colors in the spring are literally magical. Right now, the lilac is in bloom, and it smells incredible. Driving around the city and the suburbs, you’ll see so many colors and flowers and trees and… life! That’s not even talking about my lil squirrel friends.
Or the rest of the magical seasons.
But my favorite thing, my number 1 thing to share with people in Detroit, is art. The first art I fell in love with here was the Heidelberg Project, but I know that vibe isn’t for everyone. I’ve also swooned over art at local galleries, MOCAD, and the Pewabic Pottery Museum, but those haven’t been voted the best museum in the entire country two years in row.
Detroit Institute of the Arts has. And it deserves it.
I could type a million more words about it. But I’ll let the pictures do the talking.
These pics are from last weekend, when me and my friend were on the hunt for the best bathtub in Detroit. Did we find it? The answer is here.
If you’d like to know more about a piece of art, let me know… I tried to snap a pic of the artist plaque for each piece of art. At the bottom, I will share my “Art of the Day.” I’m always delighted with one piece more than the others and this one is it. My backup choice is the dapper gentleman below with the vertical stripey background.
