The White Lotus S3E1: Same Spirits, New Forms

I dunno why, but I enjoy coming up with with theories for this show more than almost any other – yes, Severance, too.

This might just be willy nilly notes this first couple of episodes, but eventually it’ll gel into theories and wants for this particular set of characters.

I mean, by the finale of Season 2, I thought the main fellas in the couples were gonna fuck.

Let’s go:

  • What is this theme song? It doesn’t capture the glee of the other two. It’s not right.
  • I can hear the roots of it in there I think. It’ll probably grow on me, but I did not have the same emotional reaction as the second season.
  • Monkeys!
  • Monkeys mentioned already – it’d be wild if a monkey was the murderer!
  • This fella’s dimples are incredible. I always wanted dimples.
  • The cinematography in this show is always breathtaking. Can I hand them an award for it?
  • GUNSHOTS! Okay, maybe the monkeys didn’t do the murder.
  • Holy shit what a tense open.
  • PARKER POSEY. She has been and always will be my favorite actress.
  • I love that Mike White casts It girls like Parker and Aubrey Plazya (S2) againsst type in this suburban almost-WASPy roles.
  • See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil – the siblings, pictured above.
  • Love the way these subtitles are executed with the Thai letters behind the English.
  • This seems like the most relaxed White Lotus we’ve visited, which is a stark contrast to the opening scenes.
  • Coolest boat for sure.
  • Fabian is our General Manager. Can’t wait to get to know him.
  • Parker Posey will get an Emmy nomination for this. I’m calling it now.
  • CARRIE COOOOON. She played the stronger woman on TV (imho) Nora Durst on The Leftovers.
  • Also love Michele Monghan. And Leslie Bibb! What a trio!
  • “Brothers and Sisters don’t sleep together” Holy shit is this a “The House of Yes” callback? I can quote that movie by heart. I’ve seen it more than any other.
  • Pong pong tree is toxic.
  • Mike White makes actresses I love play people I hate. I love/hate it.
  • At the same time, I can’t wait to get into what’s at the root of Parker Posey’s character.
  • I love Baby Billy’s girlfriend already.
  • “Monkey’s can be aggressive” Maybe they are setting up surprise monkey gun violence.
  • I had to help the Kroger Delivery lady get unstuck from the snow today. It was an exhilerating adventure.
    • idk why I told you that.
  • The background music is great. I wish the theme song matched.
  • Glad to see Belinda here. I hope she gets some healing and doesn’t have to heal.
  • Love getting to meet the locals.
  • When I sell a book and get rich I would like to do “The White Lotus” tour, where I visit all three locations for a week’s vacation.
    • Or when EngErotics hits it big and my CMO status pays off… whichever comes first, you know.
  • I love how much Mike White does without words.
  • I already feel a kinship with Parker Posey’s daughter. I am familiar with the feeling of getting to the end of the goal and then feeling too timid to step over the line.
    • Also, between her full coverage clothes and her protectiveness over her younger brother, I get the vibe Saxon did something to her sexually.
    • Locke (the younger bro) is defintiely gay or bi or pan or queer in some way, right? I thought that immediately, but didn’t consider it to be a plot point perse, because it’s just something about a person. But then I remember living in south and it makes sense as a plot point.
  • Soxon and Lockheed?! I don’t think that second name is right. God did Mike White nail southern naming conventions.
  • “My son’s coming to visit.” Welp, guess we know who the kid at the beginning is.
  • OKay so Baby Billy is there to see the Owner’s husband… who we just found out is American. I wonder if it his Baby Billy’s Daddy?
  • Oh, shit Tonya McQuoid’s hubby is an LBH (Loser Back Home)
  • Okay this older brother is trash.
  • Hmm, I feel like most episodes last season ended with fuckin’. This one ended with a couple in bed side-by-side

Some death theories I have:

  • The monkeys get a gun somehow and start shooting.
  • Someone gets overrun by monkeys and starts shooting.
  • Baby Billy finally finds the Owner’s husband that he might think is his dad and starts shooting.
  • Parker Posey’s daughter gets disgusted at her family and starts shooting. Especially Saxon, the older brother, who seems very creepy towards both siblings.
  • Parker Posey’s hubby does not use an iPhone, so maybe he’s the shooter.
  • Carrie Coon gets angry at her friends’ more successful lives and starts shooting.
  • What if Baby Billy is there instead to off the Owner’s husband? Like a hit man type situation?
  • Is someone there to kill Greg? Maybe the Italians?
  • Or maybe Tonya left all her money to Belinda and not Greg and he is there to kill Belinda?

But I know it will end up being more nuanced and complex than that.

I’m so excited to watch it all unfold.
